Pack It In

If you have ever packed up your home and moved to a new location? You know that the process of packing is the most labor and time intensive portion of any move. You will come to the rescue of these people facing the challenge of relocating. Offer a service where you pack up a person's home for them. You could charge around $200 for the average home, spending up to eight hours packing up their belongings.
Since unpacking is a much quicker process, you could charge about $100 for that. In some areas of the country, you may be able to charge a larger fee.
Some people pack slowly and methodically over a matter of weeks. Others wait until the last possible minute, randomly throwing things into unmarked boxes in a completely disorganized manner. Either-way, the process is a complete hassle and by the time they have finished packing and the boxes are all moved, then the process of unpacking begins and the hassle just seems to be never ending. Why not offer your services to do this for them quickly and efficiently?
You should charge an additional fee for actual moving supplies such as bubble wrap and cardboard boxes, since these can be quite pricey. Your general packing fee of $200 should cover the cost of packing tape and the staff needed to perform the task. You should agree beforehand with the householder whether they would like drawers and cupboards emptied.
Before the move takes place, be sure to confirm whether all rooms of the home are to be packed up or if they only need your services for specific rooms of the house such as the dining room and kitchen (where there are likely to be a larger amount of breakable items requiring special handling). You should also find out what items will be staying in the residence, such as curtains or small appliances like microwaves. In some rental or leasing situations, these items are owned by the property owner and should not be removed from the residence. Offer to review the home to be packed beforehand and provide the person moving with a quote, especially in situations where the home may be larger with more than the average rooms or having more breakables than the average residence.
You should demonstrate the level of careful packing that will take place to prevent breakage. Since all items will be out of your hands during the actual move, you will need to let the householder know that all precautions will be taken when packing to prevent breakage. You should encourage them to obtain insurance from their movers though, to prevent mishandling and unnecessary breakage.
In addition to packing supplies, you can charge an additional fee for any time spent beyond eight hours. Since some homeowners like to closely supervise the packing process, they sometimes cause the process to be less than efficient. You should be sure that you are compensated for all time devoted to their move.
You will likely want to provide some sort of coding for each room's boxes, especially if your services will also be retained for the unpacking of the boxes. A simple color coding system works well in most cases. By assigning a sticker of a specific color for each room of the home, the person moving will be able to easily locate their items when they arrive at their new destination. For example, all boxes originating in the bedroom could have a red sticker. All items originating from the bathroom could have the color blue, and so on. This will also help the movers because it will help them to easily identify which room of the home to leave the boxes in, as they transport them.
For your unpacking services, you could offer to dispose of all boxes and packing materials used which will leave the person moving with one less headache and allow you to recycle many of the moving supplies for your next customer.
